What is Void Filling?
Voids are empty areas that occur under concrete, and can lead to all sorts of structural and safety issues if left untreated. Voids under concrete usually occur because of soil movement, erosion, and settling, but can be a result of other causes. Void filling is a budget-friendly way to solve this issue with minimal disruption to the day to day life of your home or business.

How Do Voids Happen?
Voids under concrete can occur for a number of different reasons, most having to do with the interaction of the soil underneath the concrete and water. Voids may happen gradually as the soil supporting the concrete expands with groundwater during a wet season, then contracts as that water flows away or dries up. When that soil expands, it may push and move the concrete. When the soil contracts, it will then leave an empty space between itself and the concrete.
Another cause of voids is a quick infiltration of water. Burst pipes and flash flooding can cause rapid soil movement and erosion, resulting in a void. Sinkholes are another cause.
During the construction of a home, garage, or other structure, trash and rubbish may have been buried and concrete poured on top of it. As this trash decomposes, a void will occur.
How Void Filling Works
At Quantum Concrete Leveling, we are experts at filling voids of all sizes and occurring under all types of concrete structures. Our void filling process may look a little different depending on the size of the void, amount of material needed, and the location of the void in relation to the concrete on top of it.
Generally, our void filling process follows these steps:
- We locate the void and drill penny-sized holes in the concrete to gain access. We then probe the void to find out how large it is — an important step in determining how much material we will need to use to fill it.
- We use a hydraulic pump to fill the void with polyurethane foam. Poly foam is a super lightweight, incredibly strong material that begins as a hot, malleable foam but hardens and cures into a durable solid. Poly foam cannot erode over time and will not add extra weight to the impacted area.
- Once the void has been filled, we remove the pump, fill the concrete holes, clean up, and get out of your hair.
Why It’s Important to Fill Voids
While filling a void under your concrete is not the most exciting project, it’s a very important step to ensuring your home, commercial building, or property is safe and secure.
Voids that are left untreated will worsen over time. Rain water, ground water, melting snow, and fluctuating temperatures cause soil movement and erosion that will expand an existing void and make your concrete even less stable. As concrete becomes less stable, it will sink, settle, move, and crack. When this happens, it will impact whatever is resting on top of the concrete. For example, a home foundation that shifts and cracks due to a void underneath cannot adequately support the home above. This can lead to everything from minor inconveniences like doors and windows that don’t open and close, to major structural issues.
Voids that occur under sidewalks, walkways, and driveways can cause cracks and settling that are trip-and-fall hazards. The last thing you need is for someone to injure themselves on your residential or commercial property, so call Quantum and get those voids filled ASAP!
Void Filling Benefits
Filling voids under your concrete is a great investment in the overall safety and value of your home or commercial property.
Void filling benefits include:
- Affordability, particularly when compared to replacing severely broken concrete. Void filling and concrete leveling cost about a quarter of what you would pay to replace that same area of concrete.
- No damage to surrounding landscaping or structures.
- Fast work and quick results – you can use the concrete again that same day.
- Permanent results – the poly foam we use will last forever.
- Minimal disruption to existing concrete.
- No resettling
- Added value and safety to your home or commercial building.
